Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, Trempealeau Co., WI, July 11, 2002.

During an NABA count on July 11, 2002, David Hanson, Gary Krogman, Scott Mehus, and I saw a Duskywing as we were heading back to our cars. Dave Hanson, who was familiar with this species from Texas, identified it and we took many photos. Dave and I watched the butterfly as others in our group went to find the other group so that they might get to see this butterfly. The butterfly stayed in one spot for nearly twenty minutes while we waited. The other group arrived minutes after it flew away and we were not able to find the butterfly again after a long search. This was the first record of a Funereal Duskywing from Wisconsin and was the farthest north this species had been seen except for one sighting in Northern Michigan. In 2007 I was amazed to see another individual of this species in Madison.

Identifying characteristics: The only Duskywing that has been found in Wisconsin with a white fringe on its hindwing.

Similar species: None in Wisconsin.

Habitat: Found in a variety of open habitats. This species migrates north regularly each year, but rarely makes it as far north as Wisconsin.

Flight: Multiple broods.

Abundance: A very rare stray to Wisconsin.
