Lyre-tipped Spreadwing

(Lestes unguiculatus)

Lyre-tipped Spreadwings were found in most of the same habitats as the Common and Sweetflag Spreadwings. Fresher specimens, such as these showed much green on the abdomen, and often have the v-shaped area on the 8th abdominal segment that is not whitened. The distinctive shaped male appendages, the paraprocts, can be seen with good close-focusing binoculars in good light. Photos from above can clearly show a sigmoid shape (like a lyre) from which the common name is derived.
