The Skimming Bluet is often seen skimming just inches above the surface of the water, looking in the sunlight somewhat like a light stick with blue tips, moving quickly and settling back, often on the same perch. I took the photo on the right by focusing on this perch and waiting for him to return. The Auroraville Millpond in Waushara County is a good spot to view this species and Orange Bluets, which are found flying together in July and August. The bottom two photos are of females. The bottom photo was taken on top of Observatory Hill State Natural Area in Marquette County. This spot is nearly a mile from their breeding habitat.
