Orange Bluet

(Enallagma signatum)

I have seen Orange Bluets at many sites in central Wisconsin. I have seen it in Waushara, Wood, Dane, Marquette, and Fond du Lac Counties. The male of this species could easily be mistaken for an orange female Eastern Forktail. I know this, because I first noticed that this species occurred in central Wisconsin after looking at one of my photos labeled Eastern Forktail and noticed that it was this species. The key thing to look for is the orange at the tip of the abdomen for this species. This orange is not found on the Eastern Forktail. The female also can also be somewhat confusing as I had misidentified the photo below as a a Stream Bluet, a species that it very much resembles. The female may also be a yellowish green color, but all individuals that I have seen in Waushara County have been blue. The bottom photo is of an immature male.
