Vesper Bluet

(Enallagma vesperum)

The Vesper Bluet has been found mainly in the northern and eastern part of Wisconsin. Waushara County represents the farthest southwest that it has been discovered in Wisconsin. It has been discovered in Iowa except in the northeastern part of that state. Thus, it seems highly likely that this species also does exist somewhere in the southwestern part of the state. Some authors note that this species may be overlooked because it is mainly active at dusk. I took photos of this species at 5:00 pm on a partly sunny afernoon. This was the first time that I had seen this species and it was flying with the Rainbow Bluet and Swamp Spreadwing. I have seen this species only in Waushara and Wood Counties.
