First butterfly of the year! (March 29, 2005)
“Suicide Hill” is just outside Wautoma, about a mile north on Swamp Road.
On this first 60+ degree day of the year, I went to my favorite place to look for my first butterfly of the year. On a hill near Suicide Hill just north of Wautoma, I saw not a fairly worn Mourning Cloak that I expected, but the fairly fresh looking Eastern Comma shown here.

The view from the south side of the hill. On the left are abandoned gravel pits.

It is always exciting to see a butterfly here in the early spring after 5–6 months of no butterflies. Click the photo to see the view from the south and north sides of the hill. Notice there still is a lot of snow to be seeing butterflies!
